Mission Statement

The Josiah H. Hibberd Memorial Teaching Scholarship serves to perpetuate Mr. Hibberd’s lifelong passion of education in the Great Valley School District. This award will be granted to a GVHS graduating senior enrolled at a college or university who aspires to be a teacher. Priority is given to students displaying financial need and who have shown academic merit during their high school career.

About Josiah Hibberd

This scholarship was established after the passing of Josiah Hibberd, who served 43 years in the Great Valley School District as a teacher, coach, and school principal. A West Chester native and World War II Purple Heart veteran, he is remembered especially by his students as “a sweet man”, who took his students on wonderful field trips and was the “best teacher ever”. To continue his legacy, Mr. Hibberd directed that upon his passing, his entire estate would be sold to support Great Valley High School graduating seniors in their pursuit of a post-secondary degree in education.
