David Szegda Memorial Scholarship

Mission

David Szegda exemplified the heart of a teammate through kindness, character, and courage.

The purpose of this scholarship is to honor and perpetuate the life and legacy of David John Szegda, a devoted father, gifted student-athlete, business owner, mentor, and friend whose life embodied the true heart of a teammate.  Dave lived with kindness, led with character, and faced life with courage. He valued education, athletics, mentorship, and community, and he consistently lifted up those around him. He accepted others without condition, and his heart was open to all those who he encountered.
This scholarship seeks to support students who demonstrate these same qualities and who understand the importance of teamwork, perseverance, humility, and care for others.

About

Dave was born in Lower Merion on August 13, 1974, to the late Donald and Patricia, and grew up in Lionville, PA, along with his brother Matt. Dave was a gifted student whose cool demeanor, easy way and infectious smile attracted many friends that he would remain close with for life. He was also a gifted athlete in soccer and basketball and starred as an outfielder for Downingtown’s baseball team, making the Daily Local News All Area team in 1993.

Dave attended Mary Washington University, spending the summers at the beach with his buddies, and graduated in 1997 with a major in mathematics. He had a love of the beach, instilled in him by his parents on their family trips to their home in Long Beach Island. After college, he headed back to the beach for one more summer— and then ended up spending his adult life working and living there.

Dave, along with his brother Matt, became part-owners of Marabella’s Family Restaurant in Stone Harbor in 2005, a business they ran for over 20 years. As an owner, he mentored and befriended his staff, both young and old, who respected his work ethic, commitment, and wicked sense of humor. A true Philadelphia sports fan, Dave loved listening to Harry and Whitey and going on boat trips with his friends, likely more for the camaraderie than the crabbing. He loved the ocean and was a master body surfer. He also was a huge fan of music, with Pearl Jam among his favorite bands. Kind, handsome, and charismatic, Dave fostered many deep friendships along the way.

Even with all of this, being a father was his greatest talent. His children, Desmond and Minka, were his true loves and the pride and joy of his life. Dave cherished his time with them, watching wrestling, cooking dinner for them, and enjoying a game of Sorry!, Clue, or any other competitive board game.

He was a loving, doting father to his kids and involved in their various interests and activities. He saw and celebrated the true gifts of each of his children. They adored him.

Dave’s jovial spirit, generous soul, and beautiful heart live on in his family and friends.
