Charles A. Melton Scholarship


Who was Charles Melton?

Charles A. Melton was an activist and executive director of the West Chester Community Center from 1966 to 1980. He was always a leading citizen of West Chester. Mr. Melton was a teacher, coach, counselor, disciplinarian and friend to many, many young people. He was a spokesman for the African American Community on many critical issues involving race relations during the difficult times of the 1940’s through the 1970’s.

About the Fund

The Charles A. Melton Scholarship Fund was started by Dr. Clifford DeBaptiste in honor of Mr. Melton and the significant contributions he made to Chester County through his many years of civic and community leadership.  Mr. Melton believed strongly in education as a means to strengthening our learning capabilities so that we can be successful in life.

Mission Statement

The purpose of this fund is to provide financial support to students graduating from Henderson High School in West Chester, PA pursuing post-secondary education.
