Our Story
The Alene McDermott Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in February 2011 in loving memory of Alene McDermott, a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend who lost her battle with cancer September 21st, 2010. Support from her family and friends as well as Alene’s passion for singing and playing guitar allowed her to extend her life against immeasurable odds. It is the hope of all who loved Alene that her optimistic spirit and musical inspiration will be perpetuated through awarding the Alene McDermott Memorial Scholarship to college bound students who wish to embark on a career in music or art.
Alene McDermott was a joy to know. Her light-hearted personality and infectious laugh endeared her to everyone she met. Alene’s passion for music came naturally, as she was raised in a musical family and began performing at a very young age. Alene played acoustic guitar and sang in many bands, performing at area festivals, clubs and benefit concerts. Alene’s beautiful lead vocals and harmonies were appreciated by audiences and fellow performers alike.
Alene was diagnosed with breast and ovarian cancer in late 2006. Throughout many surgeries and treatments Alene’s determination and unwavering faith allowed her to continue to perform, sharing her special talent and always inspiring young people to follow their artistic aspirations. Alene lost her courageous battle with cancer on September 21st, 2010 leaving her family and countless friends compelled to continue her legacy by providing an opportunity for young people to express themselves through music and art.
