Robert R. & Phyllis F. Hollenbach Family Foundation

The Chester County Community Foundation mourns the loss of Robert and Phyllis Hollenbach.

Mission Statement

Robert and Phyllis created the Hollenbach Family Foundation in 2000.  It supports several specific charities of long-term interest to the Hollenbachs: Camphill Special School in Glenmoore; Citizen Advocacy of Chester County; Good Samaritan Services; Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church; and Spring-Ford Area Historical Society and its assigns; plus the Peirce College (now Peirce College at Lakawanna) Raymond E. Hollenbach ’16 and Robert R. Hollenbach ’48 Scholarship Fund.

Furthermore, the Hollenbach Family asked that the Community Foundation award discretionary grants to help with animal welfare, community health, education, historic preservation, homelessness and transitional living, specifically in the Spring City, Phoenixville and Royersford geographic areas.

About The Hollenbach Family Legacy of Giving

Robert R. Hollenbach was born on July 28, 1928 in Royersford, PA.  He graduated from Royersford High School in 1946.  After a year of working in Philadelphia, Bob accepted the position of Manager of Traffic at the Jones Motor Company in Spring City, PA. Jones was (and still is– https://bridgewayconnects.com/about/jones-motor-group/) the oldest continuously operating motor carrier in the nation, since John Jones founded the company in 1894. Shippers have relied on Jones for general hauling and motor freight since they purchased their first truck in 1912 to establish the first motor truck service from Royersford to

Philadelphia. Bob worked at Jones Motor Company for 35 years, and often liked to say “All the other trucking firms try to keep up with the Jones’.”  In 1982, Bob started his own business, and for 13 years audited freight bills on a free-lance basis.

Phyllis F. Benfield was born in Royersford.  The daughter of Paul M. and Anna F. (Francis) Benfield, she graduated from Royersford High School in 1949.  She worked for Jones Motor Company in Spring City for nine years, where she met and married Bob, the love of her life. A resident of East Pikeland for 43 years, Phyllis was a member and secretary for First United Church of Christ in Spring City, for almost three decades. She had been an active member of the former Royersford Church of the Brethren, where she served as the church secretary prior its merger with Mingo Church of the Brethren to form Providence Church of the Brethren. Phyllis was also an avid member of the Spring-Ford Area Historical Society.  Phyllis died on February 3, 2001 at age 70.

Bob and Phyllis were devoted community volunteers.  Bob summarized his years volunteering at Camphill Village Kimberton Hills: I just liked the way of life – the way people living there were cared for, treated with dignity and respect.”  Bob and Phyllis developed special friendships at Camphill Village and many other nonprofits. With Bob’s passing on March 7, 2025 at age 96, the residual of his estate was left to the Hollenbach Family Foundation at the Community Foundation.  We are honored to carry forth Bob and Phyllis Hollenbach’s philanthropic legacy wishes for perpetuity.
