The Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation (TERF) is pleased to announce the awarding of $52,389 in research grants to the Foundation for the Horse. With the vision and mission of bettering the life of Thoroughbreds, TERF primarily aims to support students in pursuit of education in equine industry careers and to fund research efforts, which better the life of the Thoroughbred racehorse.
- TERF awarded $20,000 to support the work of Dr. Alexandra Carlson at the University of Tennessee for research involving in vitro analysis of the optimization of stem cell therapy for the treatment of osteoarthritis using equine synovial fluid derived mesenchymal stem cells using a soluble epoxide hydrolase inhibitor.
- Dr. Drew Koch at North California State University was awarded $19,986 for research involving dual licensing of mesenchymal stem cells to enhance tendon healing.
- Dr. Lauren Smanik at Colorado State University was awarded $12,403 for the development of an experimental model of palmar osteochondral disease (POD) in horses that would allow researchers to study the progression of the disease in a controlled manner.
The Board of Directors of TERF meticulously selects grant recipients in a competitive grant making process. TERF’s grants reflect the values set forth by founders Herb and Ellen Moelis. Duprey, Gretchen and Roy Jackson, Ellen Moelis, Wendy Moon, Anita Motion, Scott Palmer VMD, Josh Pons, Lucy Zungailia, Katelyn Jackson, and Lynn Cassimeris, Ph.D.
