THOROUGHBRED EDUCATION AND RESEARCH FOUNDATION AWARDS $10,000 TO BELMONT CHILD CARE ASSOCIATION

November 18, 2022

The Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation (TERF) is pleased to award the Belmont Child Care Association, Inc. (BCCA) $10,000 to be used for educational purposes.

The mission of the BCCA is to provide a safe, supportive, and academically inspiring environment for the children of parents working in the Thoroughbred racing backstretch area located at New York’s historic Belmont Park, Aqueduct Racetrack, and Saratoga Race Course.

BCCA received funds from TERF in 2019, 2020, and 2021, which were used to fund their early childhood education program.

In alignment with their mission to support and promote equine education by supporting organizations that are educating the public on the proper care of horses, TERF continues to offer their financial assistance in 2022. BCCA will use the funding for their early childhood education program which incorporates a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) based curriculum to prepare students for elementary school while having fun and developing physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively.

Change the first five years of a child’s life and you change everything! BCCA’s tag line and a familiar phrase we’ve all grown accustomed to seeing in public ads for local child care centers and private schools,” comments Executive Director Joanne K. Adams. “What makes BCCA so unique is that we are changing lives at the racetrack every day. For the past 20 years, we’ve provided a state-of-the-art child care center, Anna House, at Belmont Park which is open 365 days a year and offers a STEAM-based curriculum for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years old. Last year, we opened Faith’s House at Saratoga Race Course which fulfilled our dream of providing a year-round program at Belmont Park and a summer program at Saratoga.”

“Each year, we have watched our budget increase due to the expansion of our programs and the rising need of providing scholarships for our children, which cost on average $1300/month per child. The high cost of child care is regularly reported and BCCA is affected by this with an annual budget of over $1.5 million to operate two child care centers. But we recognize that you really can’t put a price on giving a child a great start in life and we are most grateful to TERF for their incredible generosity and ongoing support of our mission.”

TERF’s grants reflect the values set forth by founders Herb and Ellen Moelis. TERF’s current Board includes co-Chairs Kathleen Anderson DVM and James Orsini DVM, Margaret H. Duprey, Gretchen and Roy Jackson, Ellen Moelis, Wendy Moon, Anita Motion, Toni Orsini, Scott Palmer VMD, Josh Pons, Lucy Zungailia, Katelyn Jackson, and Lynn Cassimeris, Ph.D.
